What if I told you I used a straw to make the splattered background on this card?
I started with a piece of Watercolor Paper and spread a generous amount of water on it with my Aqua Painter. I used Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight and Pacific Point ink pads. With the pad closed, I squeezed the lid, transferring ink inside the lid. I used my Aqua Painter to pick up one color at a time and squeezed a drop of color on the damp Watercolor Paper. Because the paper was flat on my surface it just sat there in a small puddle. I used a straw and blew through it repeatedly, aiming for the ink as it began to move. I had very little control over where it would end up but I loved the way it turned out.
I cleaned my Aqua Painter well between color changes, making sure the Watercolor Paper was damp each time. I have two words of warning. 1) Make sure your work surface is covered, and 2) rest between blowing the straw. I actually got a bit light headed. I liken this to trying to fill up a balloon without taking in enough breaths between blowing.
I used a paper towel and laid it on top of the finished color, pressed and then lifted. Don't pick up the paper towel and move it around or you will move the color as well. Once blotted, you can either heat set it or allow it to dry. Once it was dry I used Basic Black Archival Ink to stamp the greeting.
I stamped the pen on Whisper White cardstock and colored it in using a Blender Pen and the same ink pads, adding Smoky Slate for the pen tip.
I created a second card, changing the orientation. I'll admit, as thrilled as I was with the outcome, it's not a card you can make a bunch of at one time. A girl needs a lot of oxygen for this technique! ((smile))

Love today’s card. Very creative on your part with great results. TFS
Beautiful card Lisa. Love the colour combo too! I’m going to try to make this, but I hope I don’t “blow it.”
Love the colour choices the pen looks very Lilly Pulitzer.
Love this card and the technique you used. Thank you for sharing this.
Hi Gayle! Thank you! Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Gaeyl! Thank you so much. 😀
Ohhh, Leslie, you made me almost spit a mouthful of water on my computer screen with your comment. LOL I’m so glad you like it! Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you, Barbara!
I love these cards. I will be trying this technique. Thanks for the inspiration.
Lisa, I too love this card. What I also like is the shadowing you put around the pen with what I’m guessing is the Basic Gray? It gives it dimension. There are endless possibilities with the color combos! Beautiful colorful card.
Hi Jane! Thank you so much. I don’t have shading around the pen, just in the tip of the pen, if that is what you are referring to. I sued the Blender Pen for that small area and the Smoky Slate ink pad to color it in. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Ceresa! I’m so glad you enjoyed this card. It’s quite addicting but don’t forget to breathe! 😀
I really like this unique watercolour technique, Lisa! I’m definitely going to try it out 🙂
Hi Deborah! Thank you so much. It’s so much fun – but don’t forget to BREATHE! 😀
