Stenciling Details | Happy Hello
Rainbow backgrounds are extremely popular not just because of the bright colors but because of the transition between colors. The new Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks (aka ‘stencils’) provide four different options for unique backgrounds.
The background was too pretty to cover so I choose a simple greeting from the Sunny Sentiments stamp set. Using Versamark ink I stamped on black cardstock and added white embossing powder. The black greeting stands out perfectly on this colorful background.
Stenciling | Better With You
There’s an additional set of Decorative Masks called “Basic Patterns” that includes this fun leaf pattern. Pair it with florals, create lattice-type backgrounds or cards for men. Start with a larger piece of cardstock and then cut it on an angle for a dramatic effect on a simple card base.
Don’t overlook long thin greetings like this one from Peekaboo Farm. Not a likely choice for this card but it works perfectly. Rummage through your stamp sets and mix and match to expound on your purchase. Paired with a simple dandelion black die cut, this stencil background provides a huge emphasis to the entire card!
Stenciling | Worth Celebrating
Fade-out stenciling is a simple technique that’s quick and easy. Careful, though. A little ink goes a long way and you only need to cover a small margin. Watch today’s video for tips and you’ll be creating dozens of these in minutes!
The Batik Dies, I think, are a sleeper product in the annual catalog. The layers create stunning details that easily fit together. You’ll find the Batik Dies on page 158. Pair them as a Bundle to save 10% with the coordinating Batik Boutique stamp set (page 114).
Stenciling | Let’s Celebrate
Break out the colored pencils! This soft stencil background is enhanced by small areas of color using colored pencils. I have fallen in love with the Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. Their soft led and array of colors are perfect for this technique or any of your outline images. You’ll find these pencils in my Craft Favorites HERE, then scroll down near the bottom.
This stencil is 1 of the 4 in the Plenty of Patterns Decorative Masks on page 128. The word “Let’s” is stamped in Bermuda Bay ink and the word “Celebrate” is heat embossed in white. There is no die for the greeting so I simply cut around the letters for a whimsical look…perfect for this modern background.
Stenciling | Mermazing
This scallop (or scales) stencil is included in the Basic Pattern Decorative Masks. Perfect for this mermaid which is part of the Pirates and Mermaid stamp set (page 58). I created an ombre background but the added attraction to this card is the mermaid fin. Look closely!
I used Stampin’ Blends alcohol markers to color in the scales of her fin. While blending with these markers is easy, it’s tough to add layers of different colors in this small area and without mudding the tones. This is a perfect place to add in colored pencils! I used the Balmy Blue Stampin’ Blends combo for the bottom portion of each scale then added several colors of colored pencils.
The use of good colored pencils like the ones I used HERE in my Craft Room Favorites (shown near the bottom of the page) are non-smudge, lightfast pigments, acid free (go ahead, use them in your scrapbooks!) waterproof and have break resistant tips.
