If you think you can only do one thing with a white ink pad, think again! Today’s techniques all use white ink and each creates a different on your handmade cards.
A single pigment ink pad and a paper craft idea can take a simple card into a technique with a few easy steps. In addition to teaching you how to create a white wash card, I’m providing techniques for white wash with color, white wash shimmer, overlayering and splatter techniques. Don’t miss the extensive project sheet that features all of today’s cards. You can download it for free below.

Choose a stamp with detail areas that can easily be highlighted. Heat emboss the image using Versamark ink or white pigment ink. Yes, pigment ink can be heat embossed beautifully since it’s slow to dry!
I used a Blender Pen, which contains glycerin, to apply the white ink to the detailed areas. The Blender Pen transforms the pigment ink into a watercolor allowing for an opaque look on dark cardstock. The darker the cardstock, the more dramatic the effect. Be careful not to over saturate the paper so it doesn’t pill and allow a minute or two for the cardstock to dry resulting in a chalk-like, washed appearance.

Begin by adding the ink near the vein of your flowers or leaves as the darkest point will be when it’s first applied. Simply blend the ink to fill the area, allowing it to dry. Darker and lighter areas provide visual interest and added texture.
Looking for a little sparkle? Once the white ink has dried, add a coat of Wink of Stella to the white-washed area. The result is stunning and not easily captured on camera!
The Simply Scored Tool provides the perfect lines for all kinds of projects and I used it here to create both vertical and horizontal lines. The added texture to the simple white cardstock layer allows the texture of the stamp image to stand out. Learn all about the Simply Scored by clicking HERE.
Birthday Card
Consider stamping the image tone-on-tone, meaning the same color ink as cardstock, then white wash the image. Work within the detailed lines to avoid distortion of the image. Once dried, you can opt for the shimmer by adding Wink of Stella.
Once the white ink had dried, I add small dots to the center of the sunflower using the Early Espresso Stampin’ Write Marker.
Overlayering Technique
Not sure which background to use? Choose a silhouette die that coordinates with you focal point and adhere multiple die cut images to a cardstock layer. Once again, darker cardstock will produce the best results.
Using a Blending Brush, add white ink over the die cut areas. This beautiful technique provides a striking halo effect around the image while still maintaining the rich color of the cardstock.
Splatter Technique
Looking for a little extra pizzazz? Splatter white ink on dark cardstock to create immediate texture. Everything from snow, sand, starry skies and random backgrounds can be created.
The consistency of the ink will create varied depth so be sure to watch today’s video for tips for the perfect splatter for your next project!
