Acetate is a popular and versatile component to card making techniques. Today I’ll be teaching you 4 ways to use embossing folders with acetate and vellum paper to create beautiful handmade cards.
Stampin’ Up! products were used for today’s cards but keep in mind that any stamps, dies and embossing folders can be used to create these papercrafting techniques. And if you’re looking for a good quality vellum paper, click HERE to see what I’m using.

Vellum | Eclipse Technique
The Changing Leaves Bundle (stamp set + coordinating dies) were perfect for this eclipse technique using vellum.
I embossed both Basic White layer and the die cut tag being cognisant of positioning so the two pieces can be perfectly layered.
The tip to blending color is the secret to obtaining a gorgeous colored vellum. Blending brushes in a variety of colors that work well together will provide great results.
Vellum | Coloring Technique
Adding color to vellum can be done with a variety of coloring mediums. I love experimenting! Grab your favorite 3D embossing folder for this technique.
I used Stampin’ Blends alcohol markers but consider dye-based markers as well. Both work famously on the backside of vellum. Watch my video for some important tips!
This card making technique using embossing folders, acetate, and vellum is gorgeous! I love how the colored vellum turned out, but I think the real secret here is staying within the embossed lines of the image. It gives it such a professional touch. And don’t forget to add some pretty accessories. Just like a great outfit, the right accessories really make the card pop.
I created this card for a friend’s upcoming wedding and needed a place to hold a gift card. The Pocket Thoughts Dies HERE are die cut and score in three different sizes.
Acetate | Ombre Technique
This is likely my favorite acetate technique of all time. Not only is it forgiving but the options for ombre color combinations is inspiring!
Instead of adding color to the acetate you’ll use tissue paper. Grab white or whatever color you have and begin to build color.
I include tips on adhering the tissue in today’s video so don’t miss watching!
Acetate | Floating & Embedded Embossing
This 2-for-1 technique uses embossing folders in a creative way. The illusion of floating pieces will have everyone asking you “how did you do that?”!
The best tip to floating images is to be sure the image extend past the perimeter of the acetate. Elevating them is key to create space between the acetate and the elements.
The Wanted to Say Dies are the perfect touch to any specialty card. Choose the script or double up the greeting with an outline die. Mix and match colors and textures for one-of-a-kind appearances.
