Have you been wondering how to use watercolor pencils on greeting cards? I’ve been asked everything from “What are the best watercolor pencils”, to “Do I have to use water with watercolor pencils” and asked for techniques so I’m breaking all the details down for you today!

The best watercolor pencils are those that are well pigmented and have a soft led. Pencils that don’t easily break and let’s add pencils that coordinate with cardstock and accessories. Stampin’ Up!’s watercolor pencils fit the bill on all these and you’re going to love using them.

Today’s watercolor pencil techniques will include the use of the Water Painters and the Blender Pens. I’ll include tips for ink, paper, drying times and ‘how to’. Today’s video is packed with information and plus I’ve got two completed cards using each of these techniques.

And it’s a great day to shop! A HUGE 24-hour stamp set sale today only. Click on the “specials” graphic at the bottom for details.

Watercolor Pencil – Water Painters

The Stacked Stone background stamp is perfect for watercolor pencils. The rustic look of brick (or stone) can be created easily using a combination of colors. Stampin’ Up!’s watercolor pencils come in two assortments with no duplications. Purchase both and you’ll have the ability to mix and match colors for unique, custom shading!

The Water Painters are a self-contained paint brush eliminating the need to dip a traditional paint brush into water. This means less mess and faster completion. Three painters are included in the package; a fine tip, a medium tip and a large flat brush. Choose the painter that best fits your image.

This background turned out so pretty for this card that I didn’t have the heart to cover it up! I chose the Medium Daisy Punch and a simple greeting to play up this brick-inspired background.

Cutting Dimensions

  • Whisper White (base): 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, score at 4 1/4″
  • Whisper White (greeting): 5/8″ x 2″
  • Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper: 2 1/4″ x 5 3/8″

Watercolor Pencil – Blender Pens

Coloring options make creating so much fun! Check out the Blender Pens for those of you that prefer controlled coverage. With a precise tip, these pens can color in the most detailed images with ease. The pens are dual-tipped with a barrel holding a specialized solution for blending. NOTE: Store Blender Pens horizontally so the barrel solution remains on both ends of the tips.
